Global Recycling Day: Banyan Nation’s Vision for a Circular India

With the world taking a moment to celebrate Global Recycling Day, the necessity to change the attitude towards waste has never been so felt, especially in a rapidly developing country such as India. As much as the convenience of plastic has contributed to industrial growth it has also left behind a history of pollution, which requires a complete change in our perception of what a resource is and what rubbish is. On this Global Recycling Day, we understand that recycling is not only a fringe environmental activity, but it is a fundamental economic pillar that can help us to ensure the future of our planet. The global recycling idea is transnationally oriented and there must be concerted effort to ensure that the Seventh Resource of recyclables are accorded the same importance as water, air and oil. The vision of a circular economy in India should be high-tech and inclusive because the problem of waste management in the country is unique in terms of contamination and prevalence of the informal sector. By the time we celebrate the milestones of recycling the world in 2026, we cannot afford to be in the sense of awareness to the systems of action that include all stakeholders, including the waste picker on the street to the international FMCG brand. What Is Global Recycling Day?

Often known by many as the world recycling day this project came into existence in 2018 by Global recycling foundation. World recycling day aims at reforming the attitudes of governments, businesses and individuals to consider recyclables as a resource rather than a waste. When we commemorate world recycling day, we are glorifying the Seventh Resource. The term emphasizes the fact that recyclables are as vital to the survival of humans as the six traditional resources that we have always depended on in the past such as water, air, coal, oil, natural gas and minerals.
